Community to cleanup area around Freestyle Music Park

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) The area around the Freestyle Music Park seems like it has been left alone for years, and now a community has had enough. A group is getting ready to make some changes, and some say it's making room for more business.

One of the main issues on George Bishop Parkway is what drivers can see when they're moving through the area. There is trash and overgrown weeds right next to the roadway. For people who live near there, it's concerning. "I would think that yeah that would have something to do with the sales of homes," said homeowner Pat McKay. "I'm not going anywhere. But someday I might. And if it's still like that it's only going to get worse. Not better."

Heather Tenney with the Coastal Carolina Realtors Association says the way an area next to a home looks can affect the property value. But it not only affects the housing market, but future development as well. The association says the unkempt roadway affects the likelihood of other companies coming in to develop the area.

So the association along with the Horry County Planning Department have plans for a community cleanup to tidy up the area. The thought is if people can take the community to where it needs to be visually, then maybe developers will be able to see success there.

"Visualization of an area of a property is very important," said Tenney. "A lot of people are very visual and want to see a cleaned up community to know that this is not abandoned. This can be a project for incoming people."

The Cleanup event will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and a group will meet at 211 George Bishop Parkway. If there are other areas or communities that think they need a "clean up effort" similar to the one happening on George Bishop Parkway and Fantasy Harbor Drive, you can contact the Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee.
