Sex offenders followed Halloween curfew

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Halloween is over, and law enforcement officials say everything went smooth Wednesday night because of the extra precautions taken.

"Tonight [Wednesday] was a good night. It was actually a very slow night as far as Halloween goes. So I think a lot of that has to do with it being the middle of the week," Myrtle Beach Cpl Michael Bland said.

Myrtle Beach Police brought in several bicycle officers to patrol the neighborhoods. On a normal night, the officers would patrol Ocean Boulevard on their bikes, but because so many people were in the neighborhoods, MBPD beefed up patrols in those areas.

"Specifically on Halloween, what we're looking for is anything suspicious. Suspicious cars looking at kids or slowing down in the neighborhoods when they don't have any kids with them," Cpl Bland explained.

During the peak trick-or-treating times in Myrtle Beach, nothing out of the ordinary happened as a result of the holiday.

In Horry County, Senior Sex Offender Agent Richard Loskill was knocking on sex offenders' doors, ensuring they were complying with the Halloween curfew.

"We're looking for compliance. We're looking for lights off. No trick or treating. No Halloween festivities," Loskill confirmed.

Horry County has more than 900 registered sex offenders but only 56 had to comply with the curfew that lasted from 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Halloween night.

"The offenders we're looking for are basically people that violate minor children, lewd acts on a minor, criminal sexual conduct with minors," Loskill stated.

After all the sex offender checks were complete, Loskill said each one complied and followed curfew.
