SLED investigating accounting discrepancy at SC Education Lottery

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an accounting discrepancy at the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Officials with the lottery say in October, an internal investigation turned up a discrepancy in financial files. Lottery officials contacted SLED to conduct an investigation of its own.

"Appropriate actions have been taken and any accounting discrepancies have been resolved," said lottery Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. "Although tight internal control mechanisms were in place to prevent this type of action, someone intent on circumventing procedures and controls found a way."

Lottery officials say all retailers, players and prizes are protected.

"The people of South Carolina and our lottery players can know that at no time was the integrity or the security of the central gaming system or any of our games affected," said Bethea, who assured people the lottery has taken steps to prevent similar problems in the future.
