NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The rippling effects of Superstorm Sandy are being felt in the Grand Strand as school officials work to get high school students back home for New York City.

Horry County School spokeswoman Teal Britton tells WMBF News that the Mock Trial Team from North Myrtle Beach High School traveled to New York City for an International Mock Trial competition prior to the storm's landfall.

During the competition, the placed sixth overall, among 36 teams from five countries.

Stephanie Pacheco won most effective attorney for the entire competition.

Due to Hurricane Sandy, the team was unable to fly back home Tuesday as scheduled.

The team is currently looking for an alternate route home, since airports in and around New York City remained closed on Wednesday.

They are now renting vans to drive back down, which the school will be paying for, Britton adds.

She says the group is expected to get back in town Thursday.
