MURRELLS INLET - St. James football coach Mark Fischer took over the Shark program just two years ago and knows he is still in the process of turning things into winning tradition. Yet it is off the field where the coach is fighting a real battle, after being diagnosed with myeloma cancer.
The Beaver Bar in Murrells Inlet hosted the Fist Up for Fischer Benefit on Sunday. More than 700 people lined up and donated while eating breakfast. There were also raffles to raise donations for Fischer and his family as well. Even players and coaches from Waccamaw, Socastee, and other surrounding schools came to donate.
"It's incredible, you can never put into words what it means and how it makes your heart swell when you see community and people supporting you," said Fischer. "People I've never met, coming out, supporting and sending us good wishes and prayers. It just gives you a whole new perspective on what's important in life and it obviously touches your heart."
