City Engineer makes mall entrance his number one priority

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The entrance to Coastal Grand Mall is the number one priority of city engineers because of how dangerous the intersection is.

A new light is being put up on Pine Island Rd and Oak Forest Lane. After three years of studying traffic trends, the city engineer determined that the highly traveled intersection needs a light to prevent accidents.

"We made it first on our list. It's highly traveled, high accidents, and we receive many complaints. We take those calls very seriously. So we compiled all the data and explored the intersection. There was definitely a need," says Patrick Sadek, the Myrtle Beach City Engineer.

Construction has already started. Crews have poured concrete, laid wires and put in detectors.

"Construction should wrap up around November 15, we'll have it flash for about 5 days, and then hope to have it in full operation after the five days," says Sadek

They want to have it up and running before Black Friday, when the intersection will be busy with holiday shoppers.

"Because of its proximity to US 17, both signals need to be coordinated. That way you won't back up traffic over one intersection or the other. We're running the model, trying to figure out the ultimate timing plan. So as soon as the contractor installs the mast arms and signal, we'll go out and program the controller," says Sadek.

Sadek says this is the most used entrance to the mall.

"It will reduce accidents and make it a smooth operation for whoever is accessing that mall entrance," says Sadek.

Sadek says construction is going as planned.
