MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The latest leg of construction to Third Avenue South in Myrtle Beach is now underway. City of Myrtle Beach officials say the avenue will become a new gateway to the beach.
Construction kicked off earlier this year to the section between Hwy 501 and Kings Highway. The latest phase of work is happening between Kings Highway and Ocean Boulevard. Improvements include repaving the roads, widening lanes, adding sidewalks and moving down utility lines.
Lauren Clever with the Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corporation says this project is meant to improve that part of town.
"Actually the point of the project is to bring in more vehicular and pedestrian access to that particular area. So it is definitely going to be a gateway to that portion of the beach," says Clever.
The bigger picture for city officials is to also attract more businesses to set up shop in the area.
"It should inspire private investment in that area. Continue with the businesses that are already there, and help them, and hopefully bring in some new stuff," added Clever.
The new construction happening between Kings Highway and Ocean Boulevard will continue through the winter months and wrap up March 2013. Work is expected to continue again winter 2013, after the busy summer months in the Grand Strand.
