MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) A vehicle fire in the north bound lanes of U.S. Highway 501, just north of the U.S. Highway 17 Bypass, brought traffic to a halt Sunday evening.

A Myrtle Beach woman was driving her mini-van towards Conway, when the engine caught fire. She was able to get out of the car, without any injuries.

The Myrtle Beach Fire Department responded to the call and three engines were on scene attending the fire. A cloud of smoke could be seen from Highway 17, and cars were backed up on the on-ramp. The South Carolina DOT cameras showed cars were stopped behind the vehicle that caught fire.

Officers with the Myrtle Beach Police Traffic Division were out directing traffic, which was halted during the initial blaze while the trucks first responded to the fire.

Once the fire was out, Firefighters were checking through the vehicle and were able to pull her purse from the wreckage, which contained important documents. She was thankful for having it back, but even more thankful for just being safe.

A tow truck arrived at the scene to remove the van from the highway. It is being impounded as a precaution during the investigation. Officers do not know the cause of the fire, but do not believe it was on the fault of the driver.

For safety reasons, the vehicle will be held until the investigation is over.
