CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina senior guard Danny Nieman has been indefinitely removed from the basketball team after being arrested and charged with a DUI and Hit and Run on Thursday night.

A press release distributed at Friday afternoon's CCU men's basketball team practice confirmed that Nieman is indefinitely kicked off the team pending legal review.

The complete press release reads:

"Coastal Carolina University Director of Athletics Hunter Yuracheck announced today that senior men's basketball student-athlete Danny Nieman has been indefinitely removed from the team effective immediately."

CCU head coach Cliff Ellis has this to say about Nieman's dismissal, "Danny Nieman has been removed from the basketball team pending the results of the charge that exists with him. We're moving on with our basketball team, but he's been removed. That's the only comment that I will make at this time, but we'll just see how the judicial process goes."

Nieman, 22, of Concord, NC, was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center Thursday night at 11:50 p.m. under charges of no South Carolina driver's licence, DUI, and hit and run.

This is the third time since 2009 that Nieman has been arrested. In July of 2011, he was arrested for having an open container in his car.  That arrest resulted in Nieman being suspended for the fall semester of 2011 for violating CCU's Code of Conduct.

In August of 2009, Nieman was arrested and charged with felony possession with intent to sell or distribute marijuana, felony sell or deliver marijuana and a misdemeanor paraphernalia possession charge.  Two of the charges were dropped after he pled guilty to the misdemeanor paraphernalia possession charge.

In the 2011 season, Nieman made 13 starts in his 20 games played, averaging 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per contest.
