Registry violation gets sex offender jail time

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A Pee Dee man convicted of a sex crime is facing years in prison for failing to comply with sex offender registry guidelines and alert authorities he moved back into the area.

According to US States Attorney Bill Nettles, 36-year-old Carroll Lynn Williams of Marion was convicted of committing a lewd act on a minor in Marlboro County on Oct. 31, 1997.

After serving time in prison, Williams registered as a sex offender and transferred that registration to Texas where he chose to reside.

However, in November of 2011, Williams moved back to South Carolina and his sex offender registration remained in the Lone Star State.

Williams was arrested on Feb. 24 by the United States Marshals Service for failure to register as a sex offender. He appeared before a judge in Florence who sentenced him to 36 months in prison and five years supervised release.
