Body found in high school likely electrocuted

Posted: Updated:

BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - Authorities have identified the man found deceased in Marlboro County High School's electrical room.

Lt. Larry Turner with the Bennettsville Police Department says officers were called to Marlboro County High School just before 8 a.m. when a white male was found deceased in an electrical room.

He did not comment on who made that discovery, but adds that room is located on the west end of the high school.

Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown identified the man 44-year-old Jeffrey Cheek of Rock Hill. Cheek had been working as an electrical sub-contractor for the school system, and was working on a generator at Marlboro County High.

Preliminary examination shows Cheek died after an apparent electrocution, says Coroner Brown. An autopsy has been scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina on Thursday to determine an exact cause of death.

The investigation by Bennettsville Police and the Marlboro County Coroner's Office had wrapped up at the school before 10 a.m. and, according to Marlboro County Schools spokesman Herbert Gould, the students would stay at school and maintain a normal schedule for the remainder of the day Wednesday.

The students stayed in the classrooms while authorities were on scene.
