SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) -
In a show of sportsmanship and compassion, Crestwood
High School has agreed to allow Friday night's game to end as a 27-7 win for
Hartsville after one of the Red Foxes collapsed during the game and eventually passed away.
The game was suspended at halftime after senior lineman Ronald Rouse collapsed during a play in the second quarter.
Rouse was attended to by medical staff and was able to walk off the field under his own power only to collapse again on the sideline. The 6' 3", 320-pound lineman was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive.
Instead of pushing for the rest of the game to be played, Crestwood decided to give Hartsville the win.
"This
is a first-class and compassionate decision on the part of Crestwood High
School and we greatly appreciate their consideration," said Dr. Charlie Burry, Principal of Hartsville High
School. "Their coaching staff,
players and administration have been very supportive and kind during these
difficult times."
Hartsville will play Manning on Friday night at 7:30 in Manning.
