Event to fund Christmas Hero Boxes for troops

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A special group of women will stand in front of Sam's in Myrtle Beach Saturday morning collecting gifts to send to soldiers overseas.

Blue Star Mothers of Coastal Carolina will be collecting items on Oct. 13 in front of Sam's in Myrtle Beach from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and at Walmart in Surfside on Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The group will accept any addresses of deployed military personnel at these events as long as they will be deployed through December to avoid returned boxes.

Sponsorship forms for Wreaths Across America will also be available at these events. Wreaths Across America will take place on Dec. 15 at the Florence National Cemetery.

The Blue Star Mothers held a recent event at Beef O'Brady's in Carolina Forest to help support sending Christmas Hero Boxes to soldiers fighting overseas.

The fundraising event at Beef O'Brady's in Carolina Forest was last Thursday evening. Proceeds from this event will help pay the postage for the Christmas Hero Box mailing in December.

Carol Dion, proud Blue Star Army mom, says the Christmas Hero Box mailing is usually the largest mailing the group does all year. Previous postage totals for this mailing have run over $2,000.

The group also needs to buy special holiday items to put in these boxes like Christmas Stockings, candy canes and other holiday candy. Most of what is sent is donated by the public.
