DHEC visits top hot dog spot, sweet cupcake shop

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Freddy Kontz dines at Sam's Corner in Garden City every time he's in town. "I've been coming here for 20 years. More than that probably," said Kontz. He says the restaurant always meets his standards.

When the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) stopped by this week for a routine inspection, it was a different story. According to the report, the inspector found seven violations and a handful of dirty items in the kitchen. The items listed in the report include the ice machine, cooler vents, the floor inside the fridge, and sections of the walls and pipes.

The report goes on to show Sam's Corner was cited for one critical violation. The inspector reported too many flies in the kitchen. The presence of flies doesn't seem to bother Kontz.

"When you have open doors you're going to have flies. There's not a whole lot you can do about that," Kontz says.

Other violations came after the inspector found the fridge did not have a thermometer and found food stored on the floor. DHEC requires food to be stored at least six inches off the ground.

Sam's Corner scored an 88, which is the lowest ‘A' rating on DHEC's scale. DHEC will return next week for a follow up inspection. Manager for Sam's Corner, Vinson Ward, says they'll be ready.

"We have crews coming in to do some work that needs to be done; make sure everything is up to code," said Ward.

This week Cupcakes by Cravinley's in Broadway at the Beach also had a surprise visit from a DHEC inspector. Bradley Livingston runs the cupcake shop and he says the inspection went well.

"There were two small violations but they weren't major," said Livingston.

According to the report, one violation was for storing food uncovered and there was another storage problem.

"A couple utensils in the back room weren't stored in the proper area. It's been very busy lately."

Livingston says they've already fixed both storage issues.

"We try to keep the place very clean and very organized. He was very pleased. It took him about 10 minutes and then he was done."

Cupcakes by Cravinley's scored a 97, an 'A' rating.
