MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - It seems there are a lot of people in our area who do not understand how to take care of animals. We regularly report on animal neglect and abuse. It is concerning that animal cruelty is so prevalent in our area. Before you add a pet into your family, know what you are signing up for.
Consider This: There is a lot of responsibility associated with owning a pet. Food and veterinary care can be very expensive. House training the animal takes patience, persistence and consistency. Spaying and neutering your animals is also an important part of pet ownership, and another expense.
Local Animal Shelters are already overloaded with abandoned pets, many euthanized due to overcrowding. Funding for these shelters has also declined, adding to the problem.
We are headed into the holidays when kids start begging for that new puppy or kitten. Before you give in to the requests, do your research and make sure that you and your family are ready for that commitment. We need to decrease animal abuse. Properly educating yourself before you become a pet owner will help make that happen.
