HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - People living around Bay Road near Socastee say they're worried about how narrow the road is and how steep the ditches are on either side, and they say it's creating a nightmare for motorists trying to get in and out of their neighborhoods.

Cypress River Plantation Resident Chris Favale says as more homes are built and as traffic increases on the roads, he sees it getting more treacherous.

"God forbid any vehicle comes in your direction coming around...up Bay Road," Favale said. "If they cross the line a little over the yellow, you can't even get out of the way [and] you're going down into the ditch."

Favale and his neighbors say they've seen cars end up in the ditches many times, and he claims he's tried asking county officials for help, but so far he's gotten no assistance.

"With the amount of homes in the area, [they should] maybe move those ditches a little bit further out," Favale said. "The road is going to be that much greater and pose more of a chance for something major to happen, and let's not let that happen."

County officials say they just repaved Bay Road a couple years ago and they plan to widen a portion of the road like homeowners want, as part of a larger project to widen Highway 707.

But many homeowners in the area say they won't be satisfied until the entire road is widened.

"The worry is that with such a small shoulder and such a big drop off here on the side of the road, that if something does go wrong for the driver...it leaves them a very small margin of error," fears Favale.
