HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - When Horry County Police Chief Johnny Morgan retired earlier this year I thought it was the perfect time for Horry County to transition back to a single county law enforcement operation with the Sheriff's department leading that effort. Just because there were issues many years ago that led to the current structure, it doesn't mean that it needs to stay that way. Things change, people change and there is no good reason that Horry County is the only county in South Carolina with this two department structure.
Consider This: If county leaders don't have the fortitude to push for that change – and ultimately let the people vote – then at least they did the right thing in selecting the best candidate to run the county police department. Saundra Rhodes has been impressive as interim chief and earned the position by holding people accountable, getting results and improving law enforcement.
There is still much that needs to be done at HCPD, but if the past few months are an indication of future results, Saundra Rhodes is the right person to make that happen. I still believe Horry County would be better off with one law enforcement operation, but since that isn't likely to happen anytime soon we should support Saundra Rhodes in her push to improve the HCPD and congratulate her on this opportunity.
