Friends of fatal hit & run victim speak out after suspect drives off

LORIS, SC (WMBF) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal hit and run that occurred in Loris early Saturday morning.

According to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge, a man was walking on Log Cabin Road when he was struck from behind by a large SUV, or truck, which then left the scene.

Edge has identified the victim as 25-year-old Cruz Christeah Johnson of Tabor City. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Lance Cpl Sonny Collins with the SCHP reported Saturday, the SCHP does not have any leads on who may have been driving the suspected vehicle, or exactly what type of vehicle hit Johnson.

Loris residents and friends of Johnson told WMBF News, he was a good person and his family deserves justice.

"He was a nice person and he didn't really deserve to die like he did. But, we just want closure," Laquasha Riggins said.

"He was kinda shy but he liked to play with kids a lot. He liked to have and he was real friendly. He was just a nice person. He had a good personality," Erika Riggins said.

"I'm saddened that the person that hit the individual didn't stop and give aid to that person. You know, you think you live in a community or a society that would help one another and that's the sad part, but can you be surprised about it? No. and that's the sad part," Sherry Grissett said.

The SCHP asks anyone with information on this incident to call 843-661-4700 or dial *HP from a mobile phone.
