Consider This: CCU Student Safety

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Too often it takes a tragedy to create awareness of a situation that should have been addressed long before an accident occurred.

That's exactly what is happening at Coastal Carolina after a student died crossing Highway 544.

Consider This: I was shocked when I saw the video of students trying to cross this busy highway. This is not some neighborhood street, this is a major thoroughfare with lots of traffic and kids are playing a human version of Frogger trying to go back and forth from campus to their apartments.

CCU, the City of Conway and the SCDOT need to come up with a solution. Perhaps CCU could use a portion of the 1% capital revenue to build a pedestrian bridge; Conway could require an impact fee for new apartments to help pay for crosswalks, and the SCDOT could put up additional traffic signals, lower the speed limit and install flashing warning signs.

CCU is experiencing significant growth and leaders need to get ahead of the potential issues created by this rapid expansion. Student safety should be a top priority. It shouldn't take another tragedy to force that planning to begin.
