Scam: Your child is in debt, pay up

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Your adult child is in debt and you need to make a payment to keep them out jail. This is the latest type of phone scam targeting residents in Florence County.

Captain Michael Nunn, spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, explains that this scam involves a caller claiming to be affiliated with a law firm. The caller demands you make a payment on your adult child's debt or they'll be forced to prosecute and jail your son or daughter.

The most recent victim reports the caller asked for the payment to be transferred to a pre-loaded credit card.

Scam artists often prey on a person's emotional vulnerabilities, asking for personally identifying information and demanding money sent through the mail.

Captain Nunn advises that the scammers may live outside of the US, even if the caller ID on your phone indicates the call was made locally.

If you think you may have been the victim of a scam, report it to your local authorities.
