CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Thanks to a NIXLE alert from Conway Police, motorists were able to avoid the street in a Conway neighborhood where a very large tree came crashing down Thursday.

Conway Police sent out the NIXLE alert just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday, warning drivers to avoid the area of Laurel Street and Seventh Avenue in downtown Conway where crews were working to remove the large tree from the roadway.

It took about four hours to clear the tree out of the roadway, but around 3:30 p.m. drivers were given the all clear to pass through on Laurel Street again.

Catina Hipp with the Conway PD tells WMBF News that the tree rotted, and recent rain loosened the surrounded soil allowing the tree to topple over.

WMBF News viewer Steven Terry, with ST Advertising, Printing & Photography, sent in a photo of the tree, which was ever larger than imagined.
