Manhole covers missing in Hartsville

Posted: Updated:

HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - A series of manhole cover thefts in the Oakdale community in Hartsville has police on the lookout for a culprit.

Hartsville Police Chief James Hudson explains that seven reports about missing manhole covers in the last week has prompted his department to step up patrols in the community and reach out to Darlington and Lamar, where more covers are turning up missing.

"We are working hard to locate those responsible for these thefts," Hudson said. "Lt. Brian Rudick, Investigations Division commander, and our investigators are following leads. We have been calling nearby shred mills to see if the covers are being taken in for sale."

The South Carolina Department of Transportation will be replacing the open manhole covers, which Chief Hudson says are dangerous for motorists or pedestrians.

Anyone with information should call the Hartsville Police Department at 383-3011, or the anonymous tip system South Carolina Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
