NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - It was the kind of game that Delonzo Williams has dreamed of for the last three years. The junior running back at North Myrtle Beach scored four total touchdowns as the Chiefs snapped their 22 game losing streak.
"It was amazing because I haven't really experienced getting in the end zone in varsity in like two years," said Williams, "So to get in the end zone and put more points on the board it was amazing."
Williams has worked hard this off season to reach a moment like last Friday. North Myrtle Head Coach Perry Woolbright has seen a difference in his running back leading up to this season, with the pay-off being that performance.
"You can kind of see him coming into his own, he had a great freshman year and a great sophomore year," Woolbright continued, "He's always kind of been the young guy on the block, he was a freshman playing with juniors and seniors, he was a sophomore playing with juniors and seniors, and now he's finally a junior playing with juniors."
The key for Delonzo now is not getting complacent. But one listen to his season goals lets you quickly realize that won't be a problem.
"My goal every week is to beat my goal last week, so my goal last was I didn't know that I could get four touchdowns. I just wanted one or two touchdowns. I just want to beat last week."
While the individual success and recognition has been special, it's the team goals that drive this young running back.
"I know my teammates have my back and I have their back, I know the line is going to protect well, they just open up holes for me and I just hit them," said the junior running back.
For Williams and his fellow chiefs the goal now is to start a winning streak on the heels of snapping their losing streak.
"You still have people in the community talking about ya'll are a one hit wonder, stuff like that, this Friday we've got to prove to people that this is a new year, this is a new team."
North Myrtle will host Loris on Friday night.
