Father of boating accident victim says daughter still in ICU

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) The father of one of the victim's from Saturday's boat accident on the Waccamaw River tells WMBF News that his daughter is still in the Intensive Care Unit at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center Monday.

The father wished to remain anonymous but said she was roommates with the other girl involved in the accident. He said that woman was released from the hospital today.

When talking about the accident, the father said he was frustrated with South Carolina's boating laws because it is not required to have insurance in order to own a boat. His daughter was transported by helicopter to the hospital, and now the father expects hefty bills to follow.

As of Monday afternoon, he said his daughter remained unconscious but she did open her eyes for five to seven minutes since 9:00p.m. Sunday night. He said she had not yet been notified of Brandon Stevens death.

The Department of Natural Resources Investigators said it will take weeks to figure out exactly what caused the boat the three people were on, to collide with some trees shortly before 7p.m. Saturday. Stevens died at the scene.

The father said his daughter was supposed to start her first day of her senior year at CCU Monday. He said he expects she will miss this entire semester.

A funeral for Brandon Stevens will be held Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at the Langston Baptist Church in Conway.
