Detention center, sheriff's office join digital forces

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Sheriff's Office has now launched their new website offering members of the community they serve the information they need to keep their families safe.

It's a project that's been months in the making. With an original launch date in august 2012, the site - - was up and running in February 2013.

This new site offers a glimpse at some Horry County's Most Wanted for crimes ranging from armed robbery to failure to pay child support. The website also provides information on victims services and allows an outlet for you to submit crime tips.

Last year, officials at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center said they were just a couple of weeks away from unveiling their new website.

Deputy Director Joey Johnson said it all started after Sheriff Thompson requested to merge the sheriff's office and detention center websites into one resource for people to look up information.

So, the IT departments at the two entities have been hard at work combining the links so neighbors will be able to look up information they need to know.

That includes booking and release information for inmates, missing person alerts, in addition to alerts if an inmate escapes from the detention center.

The whole point is to make it easier for the public to have more accessible and updated information at their fingertips without having to look at multiple websites. Another benefit offers less time spent online for a detention center employee.

"We're going to be able to select a person here at the detention center and an employee downtown at the sheriff's office to be able to go in and update and keep making the necessary changes to the website so it's not something that a programmer is going to have to [do]," explains Johnson.

Johnson adds there will also be a section of the website letting you know when the county will have community events.
