CONWAY, SC (WMBF) Last Wednesday, a new Conway millionaire missed the advertised Powerball prize of $158 million by one number. Now the pot has grown to $212 million. Is tonight your lucky night?
To win you'll have to overcome the 1 in 176 million odds, or you could settle for a lesser yet satisfying payoff.
A Conway resident claimed the $1 million Powerball prize from last Wednesday night's drawing, and it turns out, the ticket was a true case of beginner's luck.
"It was my first time playing," the winning ticket holder admitted.
Turns out, the new millionaire was just having a bad day last week and made a stop at the Tiger Mart on Wright Boulevard in Conway and bought the lottery ticket to feel better.
It worked. With odds heavily stacked against it, one in 5 million plus, the $2 ticket matched all five numbers drawn on Aug. 1 to win $1 million (3, 16, 48, 56, and 58; PB: 4).
"This is too good to be true," the millionaire exclaimed.
The winner wants to keep the win and plans private.
The Tiger Mart employee who sold the winning ticket takes home a nice chunk of change too. The worker received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
Paying the extra dollar for Powerplay would have doubled the winnings, and it did for lottery players in Charleston and Pelzer last weekend.
The cash payout for this Wednesday night's $212 million jackpot payout is $142 million. Tickets must be purchased by 9:59 p.m. for the 10:59 p.m. drawing.
Tickets are $2 and available at lottery retailers statewide.
