ROBESON COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – One man is dead after a scuffle with police in Robeson County over the weekend.
Sheriff Kenny Sealey explains that his deputies received the 911 call around 7:23 a.m. on Friday, July 27 concerning a disorderly suspect at the 301 Kwik Shop in Parkton.
The call detailed that a male suspect was in the parking lot assaulting several others inside and outside of the store with a stick or pipe.
When officers arrived they found the man about one tenth of a mile from the store, Sheriff Sealey continues, where the suspect used those same tools to attack the officers in an attempt to take a patrol car.
Deputies tried to remove the male suspect from the patrol car, but he continued to assault them, prompting them to tase the man to no effect.
Continuing to resist arrest, the man was tased again before trying to take a second patrol car.
While deputies tried to subdue him, the man slipped into unconsciousness. EMS was called and officers worked to revive the suspect. He was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
The cause of the man's death has not been determined pending autopsy results.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now investigating this man's death. Sealey adds that the deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
