Hartsville PD investigates elderly man's stabbing

Posted: Updated:

HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – Police in Hartsville are investigating after a man was found stabbed in the chest in his home.

Hartsville Police Chief James Hudson tells WMBF News that they responded to a home on Cooley Street near Robeson Street around 9:45 a.m. to find a deceased male that had been stabbed in the chest.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee has identified the victim as 72-year-old Clarence McPail of Hartsville.

Hardee comments that McPail's death follows what appears to be a stab wound, but his cause of death will be determined when autopsy results are returned from Newberry County Memorial Hospital on Friday.

The stabbing was reported to police by a family member that McPail called over to the home that morning.

Hudson says McPail was found in the kitchen of the home where he lived by himself, and is believed to have had several medical conditions.

Hudson comments that the wound appears to be inflicted by a small steak knife, which was found on the floor.

The scene is being investigated as a homicide, but Hudson adds that preliminary investigation has not determined if the man's death was a homicide or accidental.
