Authorities investigate death of MA scuba diver

LITTLE RIVER (WMBF) - An investigation is underway after a Massachusetts woman died while scuba diving just a few short miles off the Grand Strand coast.

The diver has been identified by the Horry County Coroner's Office as 43-year-old Karen Murphy from Massachusetts.

The Coast Guard was notified at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and sent rescue crews for an injured diver near the General Sherman Wreck area approximately 12 miles off the coast of Little River, according to Lieutenant Tim Macnamara with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Crew members noticed something was wrong and pulled Murphy onto the 42 foot dive boat. She was brought to shore at the BW's Marina by rescue crews before being sent to the hospital.

The cause of Murphy's death is still unknown. Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard says the autopsy will take longer than usual because of additional testing in this type of event.

Coast Guard officials are continuing a Marine Casualty Investigation to determine the cause of the incident and to prevent any future accidents, says Macnamara.
