ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was injured when he was struck by a vehicle while working an accident on I-26 on Friday.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety says TFC Howard F. James Jr., 27, was investigating that collision around 5:05 p.m. Friday at mile marker 142 when an oncoming vehicle left the roadway and struck James' Patrol vehicle, causing it to strike James.

James suffered multiple injuries in the accident, and his exact condition is not known at this time. Any questions regarding this incident should be directed to the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office.

SCDPS Director Leroy Smith said, "This is the second incident in recent weeks with a trooper seriously injured. This underscores the very dangerous nature of the job our officers have to do."  Highway Patrol Col. Mike Oliver said, "We are praying for the James family and the Highway Patrol will be by their side as they go through this time."

James has been with the S.C. Highway Patrol since 2010.
