CAROLINA FOREST, SC (WMBF) – The vacant building left behind when Piggly Wiggly moved out of Carolina Forest years ago will host a new bargain outlet.
Jerry Altland, vice-president of real estate for Ollie's Bargain Outlets, tells WMBF News that they are planning to move into that location and expect to open as soon as September.
The 38,000 square-foot space on Carolina Forest Boulevard remains under a lease with Piggly Wiggly, and Altland contends that Ollie's reached an agreement to take over that lease two weeks ago.
The announcement comes as good news to businesses in the Forest Square shopping center, some who say they have seen a big drop in customers since Piggly Wiggly left. King Kong Sushi General Manager Mark Godaire says their foot traffic has dropped.
"The flow of people coming into the whole establishment slowed down obviously," Godaire said. "[I] hope it brings people, that's all I want, just bring more people in."
The terms of their lease agreement were not disclosed, but Altland added that the Carolina Forest location was not their only option. It was, however, the best fit for them.
Carolina Forest residents like Glenn Knorr say they miss the Piggly Wiggly, and are excited about the new business moving in to the fill the gap left behind.
"We don't have anything like [Ollie's] here in Carolina Forest," Knorr said. "I see that place being full and I see myself going there."
The bargain store is looking to hire between 50 and 55 employees. Visit the website for Ollie's Bargain Outlets for information on jobs.
