DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Police arrested a Darlington County man Monday who they say kidnapped three people at gunpoint last month.

Lawrence Joseph Hatchell, 54, of Hartsville, was taken into custody Monday and charged with three counts each of kidnapping, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature along with pointing a firearm, confirmed Capt. Andy Locklair with the Darlington County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened June 29 at 9 p.m. outside of Hatchell's house. According to Locklair, Hatchell had placed a car for sale in front of his house. A car with three people interested in buying the vehicle stopped, and one person got out of the car to look at it. At that moment, Hatchell came out of the house with an assault rifle and held the three at gunpoint until police arrived.

All three victims signed a complaint which officials investigated and resulted in Hatchell's arrest on Monday.

Hatchell is being held at the Darlington County Detention Center and his bond has been set at $21,000.
