SCHP names trooper involved in deadly shooting

SUMTER, SC (WMBF/AP) - The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating a deadly shooting incident in Sumter County that involved a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper and a driver Saturday evening.

The incident occurred Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Beckwood Road on US 521.

According to the Associated Press, trooper B.O. Stokes fatally shot Devin Taylor, 25, of Dalzell, in the chest and abdomen during a traffic stop.

According to a press release by the SCHP, trooper Stokes stopped Taylor for speeding and reportedly administered a sobriety test.

Investigators say trooper Stokes tried to arrest the 25-year-old driver for DUI but he resisted arrest and a struggle encountered between the trooper and the driver.

Trooper Stokes attempted to use his taser to hold back Taylor but was unable to control him and shot the driver to protect his life.

According to the SCHP, the trooper will be on administrative duties during the investigation by SLED. We will bring you the latest details as they become available.
