HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Horry County Police arrested a Longs woman who they say was buying dogs using fake MoneyGram checks throughout Horry County.
Officials arrested Crystal Gail Buffkin, 32, of Longs, Wednesday afternoon and charged her with obtaining goods by false pretenses and giving false information to law enforcement.
Sergeant Robert Kegler with the Horry County Police tells WMBF News, the fraud investigation began earlier this year after victims reported to police that Buffkin would contact them based on internet ads they posted of puppies that were for sale.
Police say Buffkin showed up to buy the dogs using handwritten MoneyGram checks and when the victims went to cash the check, they couldn't because they were fake.
According to Kegler, Buffkin continued to use the fake MoneyGram checks by selling the dogs she bought at the Little River and Florence flea markets.
Booking records show Buffkin was arrested twice in June on similar charges.
Buffkin is currently in custody at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Her bond has not been set.
