FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Police
responded to a shoplifting call in Florence over the weekend got more than they
bargaining for when they opened the trunk of their suspects' car.
Major Carlos Raines, spokesman
for Florence Police Department, tells WMBF News that officers responded to the
CVS on 933 South Irby Street to a reported shoplifting on Sunday around 9:25
p.m.
Turning into the CVS parking lot from Cherokee Street, the first officer on the scene noticed a male walking
swiftly away from the store before spotting a woman matching the suspect description
given, a black female in a yellow shirt and jean shorts identified as 31-year-old
Nakiya Heck of Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Heck climbed into the
back seat of a car driven by a male, identified as 30-year-old Jayson Arias of
Boca Raton, FL. The officer blocked that vehicle before they could flee the
scene.
Raines says after searching they found the two bottles of multi-vitamins
reportedly stolen concealed in Heck's purse.
Mrs. Heck insisted she did
not take anything, and Arias further denied knowing anything about the contents
of the car. Further searching found even more bottles of vitamins in a trash
bag, prompting the officer to call for assistance to search the vehicle which
belonged to a rental company in Florida, Raines said.
In the car officers found 886
bottles of assorted pain relievers and vitamins and three cups from Wendy's that
were still cold. They also found identifying documents that did not match
Arias or Mrs. Heck, but belonged to Mrs. Heck's husband.
Raines says the driver's
license in the wallet matched the man seen walking across the parking lot and
away from the CVS when police arrived. When asked where her husband was, Mrs.
Heck responded that he was in Pennsylvania.
Jesse Heck, 33, was located
nearby and all three suspects were charged with hindering after they were transported
to the Florence County Detention Center. Mrs. Heck was also charged with shoplifting.
The bottles of pills were
seized, logged into evidence and the vehicle was towed.
