FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The inmate that died while in custody in Florence County has been identified.

Florence County Deputy Coroner Don Reynolds identified the deceased inmate as 57-year-old Richard Rublowitz, who died in the Florence County Detention Center Thursday afternoon. Coroner Bubba Matthews says he was found hanging.

The official cause of death has not been released.

A press release from the New Jersey Department of Justice says Rublowitz, his wife 55-year-old Mindy Rublowitz, their sons 33-year-old Matthew Rublowitz, 25-year-old Sean Rublowitz, and 31-year-old Justin Rublowitz along with Sean's girlfriend 26-year-old Kristin Jacobs and Justin's wife 31-year-old Jacklyn Rublowitz, were arrested in New Jersey by members of the DEA's Tactical Diversion Squad.

The family was reportedly involved in a cross-state drug operation with a New Jersey pharmacist and two other individuals, explaining why they were booked into the Florence County Detention Center on Wednesday for safekeeping.

According to the Department of Justice, Rublowitz and his wife were employed in a New Jersey doctor's office while retaining full time residency in South Carolina, making frequent flights between the two locations, filling prescriptions for oxycodone and selling the drugs.

Between the time of August 2009 and May 2012, approximately 190 separate FedEx and UPS packages were mailed between several of the defendants in the case at a FedEx pickup store. The package intercepted by authorities on Dec. 16 contained 379 oxycodone pills.

Rublowitz's wife and sons were released from the custody of the Florence County Detention Center at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Captain Michael Nunn, spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, says the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating Rublowitz's death at the request of the sheriff's office and any further updates will be coming from SLED.
