DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Two individuals are now behind bars, the sheriff's office in Darlington County reported, after a sweepstakes business was reportedly robbed on Carolina Avenue.

Captain Andy Locklair, spokesman for the Darlington County Sheriff's Office, tells WMBF News that a sweepstakes business on the 700 block of East Carolina Avenue was robbed around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday by a black male in his early twenties, wearing a white T-shirt and a black bandana.

The suspect is believed to have hit the store clerk in the head multiple times with a handgun before he fled on foot toward an apartment complex with an undisclosed amount of money, where K9 units tracked the scent.

Witnesses say they saw a man fitting that description leave the scene in a white in color SUV, possibly a GMC or Chevy Trailblazer. The tracking units have been pulled from the scene but deputies continue to patrol the area in search of the suspect, Locklair added.

The store clerk, Locklair says, was treated on the scene by EMS.

On Thursday, 29-year-old Christopher Ham and 27-year-old John Berkeley Arthur were booked into the Darlington County Detention Center on armed robbery charges in connection with this crime.

Locklair says more charges are possible. Booking records show the bond for Ham and Arthur has not yet been set.
