MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Going from $20,000 to $50,000 is a nice pay increase. Plus… a $500 per month car allowance. That's the compensation package the Myrtle Beach City Council approved for the mayor that will take effect after the next election.
Consider This: There is no doubt that Mayor Rhodes is passionate about the city and he never tires. If you go to any event there's a good chance you'll see the Mayor there even though the position is part time.
The mayor's position deserve a higher salary, but the amount of the increase is certainly up for debate. And now that the job is paying more the responsibilities of the position should be reviewed and adjusted to reflect the higher income.
However, one thing should not change. The day to day operation of the city should continue to be handled by a city manager. Paying the Mayor more is one thing, having that position run the city would be a bad decision. That doesn't seem to be where council is headed with this pay increase, and the people of Myrtle Beach need to make sure it stays that way.
