COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announced its highway fatalities report Monday afternoon for this past week. Greenville was on the top list with the most fatalities.
According to the SCDPS report, as of June 24, there have been 388 fatalities on SC highways compared to 386 deaths last year. Of the 260 motor vehicle drivers who have died in 2012, 167 of them did not wear seat belts, according to the report.
Since midnight on Sunday, 47 pedestrians, 55 motorcyclists and 11 bicyclists have died on the state roads and highways. Where does this leave our area?
Greenville, Horry County and Florence were the top three with the most fatalities. Greenville was number one with 27 deaths, an increase from 25 deaths in 2011. Horry County was second with 19 deaths, a decrease from 22 in 2011, leaving Florence in number three with 17 fatalities, a significant increase from 8 in 2011.
