CAROLINA FOREST, SC (WMBF) Horry County Emergency Officials are working to keep everyone informed of the new evacuation routes. They are now reaching out to neighborhoods to make sure everyone is on board.
If a hurricane were to hit right on our coast, people living several miles away from the beach would still have to evacuate. That means even communities in Carolina Forest, Forestbrook and Socastee would have to pack up their things and go.
Officials say they are having these town hall meetings to make sure everyone is on notice. They are worried about people living in areas that normally are safe from the storm.
"If people understand and understand why it's important they're going to be more likely to follow the recommendations," said Amelia Hadfield, who lives in one of the newly formed evacuation zones. "And do what they should do to be safe."
What officials are especially concerned about is making sure the people who live in the new evacuation areas even know what to do when it comes to evacuating. So residents will have a chance to ask questions and get a full understanding of the new routes.
Since we already are in hurricane season, emergency management officials say they've got to get the word out and fast. "We're trying to take something that's been in place 20 years and change it rather quickly," said Randy Webster, with Horry County Emergency Management. "So it will take a few more years I'm sure to really get it to sink in. But the important thing is we could have the storm this year. That could impact these folks. So we want to make sure and give them all the knowledge that we can."
The first of the several town hall meetings will be Wednesday evening in Carolina Forest. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the Carolina Forest Community Center.
