16 busted for illegally obtaining NM license

CHARLESTON, SC (WMBF) Federal prosecutors have indicted 30 people who were illegal in the United States traveling from South Carolina to New Mexico to illegally obtain driver's licenses Tuesday.

According to an AP report, 16 people from the Charleston area, along with five from New Mexico, three from Virginia, two from Tennessee and one from North Carolina and Georgia were among those that appeared in court to face that charge.

Authorities believe these suspects traveled to New Mexico to attain a driver's licenses because the state doesn't require proof of US citizenship to get a license, said the AP.

The defendants used falsified documents such as fake utility bills when applying to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department to prove their residency in order to get the licenses, said AP.
