HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Officers with Horry County Police are working to piece together the details after a security officer reported a young man drove a vehicle into a pond near Ocean Lakes.
Officers responded to the 6000 block of South Kings Highway just after 6 a.m. Tuesday where security had detained a suspect for motor vehicle theft.
The incident report obtained by WMBF News says the vehicle in question was 'bottomed out' in the dirt at the edge of a pond inside a campground and the suspect jumped out of the car and into the lake.
Security followed the 16-year-old suspect into the water, detained him and held him in the security office until police arrived.
The suspect told police when questioned that he and two friends had come to the campground with the intent to steal the vehicles, but he "got fed up with things and stole the cars in an attempt to kill himself."
He did not reveal the identity of his partners in crime.
The police report says a golf cart was stolen from within the campground, and was found in the same location where another vehicle was stolen. One victim reported finding crackers and open alcohol containers near the scene where their vehicle had been.
The report indicates at least three vehicles were stolen, and property was taken including CDs, paperwork and an MP3 player.
The suspect was transported to Conway Hospital before being cleared and taken into the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice. His charges have not been released.
