2 Horry Co. candidates decertified after election day

Posted:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Two Horry County candidates who ran unopposed in their respective races Tuesday have been decertified based on a recent decision by Supreme Court Justices.

According to Doris Hickman, Horry County Democratic Chair, a recent decision by Supreme Court Justices that ruled that Florence County Republicans incorrectly certified candidates who had not properly filed paperwork now disqualifies two Horry County candidates.

Hickman says the Supreme Court Justices ruled that because economic disclosure papers were not properly filed at the same time several Florence County candidates filed candidacy documents, they were not included on Tuesday ballot.

Based on that interpretation of the law, Hickman says Keisha Kirkland (School board district 8) and Cedric Spain (House seat district 58) have been decertified.

Neither Kirkland nor Spain were on the ballots Tuesday because they were running unopposed in the democratic race.
