Police; elderly man beats girlfriend with piece of wood

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Myrtle Beach police have arrested a man who they say assaulted a woman at her apartment early Sunday morning.

The incident happened Sunday at 2:00 a.m. on the 2200 block of North Kings Highway. The suspect Monroe Hoyt Johnson, 74, of Myrtle Beach was arrested Sunday morning around  8 a.m. for allegedly beating his girlfriend with a piece of wood while she was sleeping, according to a police report.

Officials say the victim was bleeding and had swelling and discoloration under her right eye when police arrived at the scene. The victim told police when she woke up she saw Johnson standing over her with a large piece of wood in his hand, said the police report. Johnson hit her several times with the wood on the back of her legs and punched her in the face, according to the police report. 

The victim didn't know what prompted the attack on her but told police Johnson may have a mental illness of which he suffers from severe paranoia, according to the police report.  

Johnson is charged with assault and battery of second degree. He's being held at the MBPD jail.
