HORRY COUNTY (WMBF) - Nearly four months later, the three men responsible for the shooting death of a 20-year-old Myrtle Beach man have found their way behind bars.
Sgt. Robert Kegler, spokesman for the Horry County Police Department, says investigators on the case initially identified two suspects in connection with the deadly shooting on Ronald McNair Boulevard on Friday, June 8.
The first suspect, 21-year-old Shelton Lathal Butler, was arrested on the evening of Tuesday, June 19 and charged with murder. He was released from that facility nearly a month later, and is now serving time at a Department of Corrections facility in Turbeville for strong armed robbery.
Police searched all summer for the second suspect, 19-year-old Donavon Curtis Johnson, believed to reside in the Conway section of Horry County.
Johnson was wanted for others crimes, including attempted murder in Conway, and escaped custody in handcuffs, only to be located a couple of days later.
Johnson was taken into custody in mid-September and charged with murder. He remains incarcerated with no bond.
Sgt. Kegler tells WMBF News that on Tuesday, Oct. 2, the third and final suspect, Charles Johnson, was located by the US Marshals suspect in a hotel on Ocean Boulevard and Eleventh Avenue South.
Kegler adds that Johnson is charged with murder.
Investigators with Horry County Police told WMBF News they responded to reports of shots fired along Ronald McNair Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. on June 8.
The police report obtained by WMBF News said there was no victim when they arrived on scene, but they learned that a man had been shot and he was transported to a local hospital by three female witnesses.
Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler identified the victim as Jose Gutierez, 20, of Myrtle Beach. Gutierez died from his injuries around 9:15 p.m.
The report says officers discovered fresh blood, a sneaker and a cell phone on the street in front of the Gutierez's home on Ronald McNair Boulevard.
One witness told police they saw a male shoot at their daughter's boyfriend, and another witness claims she heard a gunshot and her grandson came running into her home and cried that someone had been hurt.
The second witness then reported seeing a man identified as "Travis" leaving the scene in a white in color vehicle. All of the witnesses later told police they did not see the incident when it occurred but heard the gunshots as they rang out.
Investigators with Horry County Police Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene, and tell WMBF News they are still working to determine a motive.
