Investigators say they have arrested a 15-year-old girl who pretended to have an asthma attack then stabbed an employee at a children's emergency shelter in Moncks Corner.
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened at the Callen-Lacey Center on Wednesday night. The girl, who was housed at the facility, was charged with attempted murder and theft of a motor vehicle following an assault at the center and a police pursuit.
On Thursday night, authorities responded to the facility in reference to a possible stabbing and found the 63-year-old victim in front of the center holding a butcher knife with an 8-inch blade that had its handle broken off.
Deputies say the woman was suffering from cuts to both of her index fingers, a cut to the left side of her neck and swelling and bruising above her left eye. The victim told deputies that she was attacked and stabbed by a 15-year-old girl who was housed at the facility.
The victim said it all started when the girl said she was having an asthma attack. Authorities say the victim then went to the cleaning room, located at the back of the facility, and unlocked the cabinet holding the girl's inhaler.
At that point, the victim said the girl struck her in the back, knocking her to the ground. As the victim tried to get up, the girl started yelling,"I'm gonna kill you (expletive)."
According to authorities, the girl pulled a broken knife from behind her back, stuck the blade in the victim's stomach, then slashed the victim's neck causing a cut to the neck. The victim said when she reached for the knife, a fight over the blade started, which caused two more cuts on each of the victim's index fingers.
An incident report states that as the victim attempted to get away, the girl struck the victim in the chest and face area resulting in bruising to the chest, and swelling and bruising to the left eye.
Deputies say the girl then covered the victim's face with the sweater that the victim was wearing and yelled again,"I'm gonna kill you (expletive). "
The victim said she was able to get the suspect off of her and made her way to the front of the facility and called 911. According to the victim, as she was making her way to the front, the suspect followed her, attempting to assault her again.
Investigators say the girl was able to get the keys to the facility van and drove off towards Highway 52. The victim said she followed her briefly before turning around and returning to the center.
The sheriff's office report that a notification went out to all available units in the area regarding the suspect's vehicle. Authorities then located the suspect's van driving towards North Charleston on Highway 52 and initiated a traffic stop.
Investigators say the suspect did not stop. A Goose Creek Police Department officer then pulled in front of the van causing the vehicle to stop.
The girl was transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center for pictures and prints and then returned to the sheriff's office where the Department of Social Services were notified.
A deputy escorted the victim with EMS to Roper Berkeley.
