Coroner: Dogs bit toddler several times in fatal attack; no charges filed

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston County Coroner's Office confirmed Tuesday that two dogs bit a toddler several times in a fatal attack outside a home in Mount Pleasant in late May.

During a press conference, Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten gave the findings of her investigation on the mauling attack and death of 2-year-old Ja'Marr Tiller.

Wooten said that Tiller's injuries were consistent with bites from two dogs that are in custody and have not been put down.

According to authorities, a specialist was called in to examine Tiller's wounds and confirmed that Tiller's injuries were of bite marks from the two dogs seized from the home following the attack on May 27 at 2470 Highway 17 North.

Coroner Wooten said the two dogs were sedated before specialists took impressions of their teeth and compared them to the wounds on the child's body.

Wooten said the results confirmed that those two dogs bit Tiller multiple times on his front and back, from his head to his feet.

Who exactly owns those dogs has been called into question.  Tiller's uncle told Charleston County deputies that he took care of one of the dogs but the other was just a stray that came to visit.

Authorities said that no charges have been filed yet, but an inquest may be held in the upcoming weeks to try and determine exactly what transpired on the night Tiller was killed.
