Glenns Bay Rd. widening project in planning stages

Posted: Updated:

SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) Horry Count Engineers said the Glenns Bay widening is one of the next projects on the docket to get started. Officials said Glenns Bay along with Highway 707 will both start before International Drive gets paved all the way up to Highway 90.

That is because of a prioritized list created back in 2006 when voters approved a one-cent sales tax to fund the projects. Engineers said it could be sometime in 2013 for the Glenns Bay project to go out to bid.

Some said it is not a moment too soon. Robert Bannan said,"People are driving down and they're trying to avoid the potholes so they go one or two feet into the other lane and you're wondering if they see you."

Stoney Chaffin added,"If I need to go to the store I won't go between 4-6 or 6:30. I'll wait until after. It's really a hassle to think about getting out on the road anytime from now until October. It's just a bad situation."

People who live off of the busy road said accidents are all too common. Bannan added, "One time a guy didn't see us, don't know if he was on his phone just waiting for traffic to clear to pull in, and he didn't see us until last minute and side swiped us and ran head first into the ditch."

Drivers said they have to fight narrow lanes and bad traffic tie-ups everyday which makes for some close calls. Christy Serio said, "The really big curve right in the middle of it. I'll be driving around it normally and someone just whips by going way too fast around that curve…almost ran me off the road."

Add to that multiple fatal accidents at the Glenns Bay Road intersection and the 17 Bypass. Chaffin said, "Do it right now, they need to start working on it right away. People are getting hurt on this road."

Serio added, "It should be a good 15-20 minute drive all the way down here, and it's smooth sailing all the way but as soon as I get down to this end at Glenns Bay this intersection at bypass and Glenns Bay, it's horrible."
