Little River car break-in suspect arrested

LITTLE RIVER, SC (WMBF) Horry County police have caught the suspect in connection with numerous property theft cases at the end of May in Little River.

The alleged suspect was on caught on surveillance camera breaking into homeowners' cars on Carriage Lake Subdivision. Based on the release of the picture, HCPD began receiving several tips after the photograph of a suspect was released.

The suspect is identified as 20-year-old John Mitchell Hughes a Myrtle Beach resident.

In total, the robber entered eight unlocked vehicles and took different items of value from each car. The stolen items are mostly loose cash and coins along with one 2005 Coastal Carolina Big South Football Championship ring. 

"This clearly demonstrates the success that can occur when there is cooperative effort between the police and the community.  These are our communities and together we can keep them safe" says Horry County Police Interim Chief Saundra Rhodes.

Hughes is charged with 16 counts breaking into motor vehicle and two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle.

He is currently in custody at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
