BRUNSWICK COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Brunswick County Deputies who responded to a call concerning a man hit by a vehicle say the victim's girlfriend is to blame.

The incident occurred Sunday night on Oxpen Road. Deputies say they were called out to a situation involving a man hit by a car just before 10 p.m.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found Michael Anthony Pate, 52, underneath a vehicle in the driveway. Pate was declared dead at the scene.

Investigators say Pate's girlfriend, Julie Ann English, 48, was the driver of the vehicle. After investigating, deputies say a fight broke out between the couple and Pate hit English on the face, cutting her cheek.

Deputies have not said what transpired after the fight that led to English getting into the vehicle, but they do believe English was driving the car that ultimately killed Pate.

English was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

English's bond is $100,000. The investigation remains open and the sheriff's department has requested an autopsy on Pate.
